Why I Don't Keep a Cleaning Schedule as a SAHM

I know, I know. Blasphemy! Lately, I feel like I always see things about how to's on a cleaning schedule, complete with pretty printables, to stay on top of things as a SAHM.

I mean... I have an entire Pinterest Board with pins saved about cleaning schedules when I kept trying to make one.

But you know what I found? I do WORSE at homemaking when I try to schedule it out!

And I know some of you are shaking your heads and throwing your hands in the air screaming "Me too!!!!". Or you're just doing it in your head. But, moving on.

I can't follow a cleaning schedule. I can meal plan like no ones business, but if I even remotely get behind on a cleaning schedule, I'm done. This momma throws the towel in and goes back to her own system.

There are certain things I do every day like dishes and wiping the kitchen counters, sweeping, and wiping down the high chair (who else's toddler makes a disaster of their high chair. Every. Single. Meal.?).

Here's how I handle certain home tasks that are usually on those pretty printables I wish worked for me (because c'mon, some of them are pretty awesome looking):

As a SAHM, you may be shocked to learn I don't have a cleaning schedule. And it works for me! #sahm #cleaning

Laundry

This is a big one for me. Everything I ever see about a homemaking schedule has you doing a load of laundry every day and folding it and putting it away as soon as it comes out of the dryer.

Sounds like a cool plan, right? Right?

Except, you know. Life. Life happens and before I know it I'm 3 days behind my "schedule", there are mounds of clean clothes everywhere, and everything is so wrinkled it either goes back in the dryer or gets sprayed with fabric de-wrinkler (or both in some extreme cases!!).

So instead, I go with the flow. My laundry basket isn't full yet? Nope, not going to wash it.

I don't have time to do tiny loads because today is the day it is on the cleaning schedule. That makes more work for mama and like Sweet Brown says "Ain't nobody got time for that!" Just because it's the day to do a certain load doesn't mean I can/want to do it.

Mopping

I admit it, I hate loathe mopping. Probably because my house is all tile or laminate except for the bedrooms, which are carpeted. So probably 75% of our 1800sqft house is mopping territory. Ugh.

Honestly, I sweep and use the dust mop daily, but don't really mop every week. It's just not my jam. And since I constantly have tiny humans running around my house, one of whom is always falling and keeps a knot on his forhead, it is a job that has to be done when they are sleeping. At night. When I'm exhausted and don't feel like cleaning that much square footage!

Dusting

Yeah... We're just not even going to talk about this one. Moving on.

Bathrooms

Ok y'all. I have 3 full bathrooms to clean. And I live with 3 boys. Enough said. (Side note: My mom- Nana as we call her- can vouch for a particular incident where my almost 4yo peed in a bathroom and didn't flush. Then said bathroom didn't get used for a couple days and poor Nana found it... Still sorry on that one Nana!)

I don't keep a certain day that I clean the bathrooms, but they all get done at the same time at least once a week or they start to smell like a pee factory. Like a nasty, dirty boy pee factory.

I'm sure cleaning schedules work for some of you and that's awesome. But they don't work for me. I keep trying every 3-4 months or so and end up failing miserably... Maybe one day. I'll let you know if I find the magic cleaning schedule for us hot mess moms!

Do you use a cleaning schedule? Does it work for you?
