Sometimes, we don't always understand what our mission is for God when we are in the throws of motherhood. The other day, I was scrolling through Facebook after my kids had gone to bed. I ran across a post of an old acquaintance from college that a friend of mine shared. She was having trouble as a new SAHM of a newborn and toddler understanding her mission in life related to her Christianity.
And I knew exactly how she felt. I, too, had the same feeling when I first started staying home. In the early days, couldn't wrap my brain around how on earth God was going to use me for His Kingdom because I was staying home with my kids. I was fairly secluded from the "real world" as the mother of a toddler and newborn.
But I failed to recognize one simple thing...
He was using me no matter my physical circumstances! I think so often we fail to realize that God uses us where we are! As a mom who stays home, I not only have the opportunity to minister to my children and my family, but others as well.
How many times have you sat on a park bench watching your kids play and talked to another mom? Have you ever been in the grocery store and struck up a conversation with the person behind you in line? Did you ever realize that the mom you see every week at your exercise class is wavering in her faith because her husband isn't a believer?
You are not an island
We have ministry opportunities all around us. Whether it's the new family in your neighborhood or the mom in your book club group.
Just because you identify yourself as a mom doesn't mean you are chained to only your children. Other ministry opportunities will cross your path whether your children are older and more self sufficient or are small and needy.
Don't miss your moment
Listen for His voice. I know how easy it is to get caught up in the early years of motherhood. It's a hard adjustment time for many women and their families.
But know that He wants to use you for His kingdom. Psalm 96:3 says "Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! (ESV)"
You can be His light to the world in your mom group, homeschool co-op, aerobics class, soccer practice, dance class, your home whether you stay home or work, the grocery store. Everywhere!
Some days, your only ministry may be to your children and family. Other days you may be able to help another mom in crisis in the pre-k pick up line. Maybe even you and your family feel called to the mission field on the other side of the planet. But know all of these situations are important to God no matter how they rank on our own importance scales.
Don't count yourself short
Never ever feel like you are contributing nothing to God's kingdom because of your life as a SAHM. He is using you in all you do. You just need to be open to listening then act.
Jesus' last words before His ascension are in Acts 1:8 "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
Maybe your calling is to minister around where you are. Or He is calling you and your family "to the end of the earth". But know, mama, you are called and you have the power of the Holy Spirit. Do not count yourself short because you're "just a mom". You are a daughter of a King and He is wanting and able to use you as long as you follow.
